A celebration of Jerome Robbins! We are excited to announce that SLB has been invited to perform alongside the @nwsymphony and dancers from @miamicityballet , @nycballet and @houstonballet in Miami - Apr. 17-19. . Eight of our dancers will perform Robbins’ Interplay, and join the other companies as flappers and gangsters in an excerpt of Robbins’ choreography for the musical Billion Dollar Baby (seen here). Dancer @zoe_midd will also perform “All I Need is the Girl” from Gypsy with Broadway performer @brianletendre . What Are the Dancers Doing? Dancer @jaredbrouillette explains Marking. . The dancers have to spend hours every day rehearsing ballets, which puts a lot of stress and fatigue on their bodies. To help alleviate this, dancers will, some of the time, “mark” their dances while they are in the process of learning a piece. This means they will walk through the piece and hit their “marks” (where they are supposed to be at certain points in the music) without fully doing the jumps, turns and pointe work that expends so much energy. This lets the dancers still get a feel for timing of where and when they need to do their moves without tiring themselves out. Once a sequence is learned, the dancers will dance it “full out”, meaning they will execute all of the moves fully so the choreographer/repetiteur can see that they are doing the piece correctly. . #stlouisballet

Every pair of pointe shoes is unique. 🩰 Every dancer on pointe learns throughout their years of dancing what works best for their comfort and safety. Our dancers can order their shoes from the manufacturers with any number of customizations done to fit their individual feet. . Once they receive their shoes, they also might add modifications of their own by sewing, scraping, cutting and beating their shoes in order to get the exact shape, support and grip that they are looking for while dancing. . This means that a lot of time, effort and funds go into every pair of pointe shoes that our dancers wear. Each pair costs over $100, and a pair of pointe shoes can sometimes last as little as a single performance. .
