El New York Walk —también llamado simplemente "New York" o "el Walk"— es una figura de intercambio de posiciones en salsa de pista lineal: el líder y la seguidora se desplazan el uno junto al otro para intercambiar los extremos de la pista lineal fija, abriéndose en el primer compás y resolviendo con una rotación de aproximadamente 180 grados que los vuelve a enfrentar en el segundo. Pertenece al estilo On2 "New York style", el dialecto de salsa orientado al slot cuyo quiebre cae en el tiempo 2 (y nuevamente en el 6), lo que otorga al walk su característico peso retrasado y arraigado, ya que el paso direccional aterriza después del tiempo fuerte y no sobre él.
La figura toma su nombre de la ciudad de Nueva York, la ciudad más poblada de los Estados Unidos y un centro mundial de cultura, entretenimiento y las artes.[1] El estilo On2 maduró en las comunidades latinas caribeñas de una ciudad que se ubica entre las más lingüísticamente diversas del planeta —una puerta de entrada para inmigrantes que alberga una de las mayores poblaciones metropolitanas nacidas en el extranjero del mundo—, el contexto demográfico en que la salsa estilo "New York style" tomó forma.[2]
Ejecución
La figura abre en el primer compás: el líder quiebra y angula su marco para despejar el slot, invitando a la seguidora a la misma línea. En el segundo compás, ambos bailadores caminan hacia adelante —típicamente pasando hombro derecho con hombro derecho— y rotan para volver a enfrentarse, completando el intercambio de posición de media vuelta. Dado que el tiempo base es mambo, el quiebre direccional cae en el tiempo 2 y no en el 1; marcar el walk en el "2" lo mantiene en fase con la música y preserva el desplazamiento suave y deslizante por el que la figura es conocida.
Contexto entre escenas
En la mayoría de las escenas lineales, la figura circula con su nombre en inglés sin mayor variación. El casino cubano, construido alrededor de un centro de rotación en lugar de un slot fijo, no tiene un equivalente directo, ya que la lógica de intercambio de posiciones del walk depende de contar con dos extremos de una pista recta para intercambiar.

From a single- or two-hand hold facing the follower, the leader breaks back on his left on count 2 and angles his torso about a quarter-turn to open the slot; on 3-4 he leads her to begin travelling toward his end. On 6 he steps forward to walk past her, right shoulder to right shoulder; on 7 he completes the remaining rotation, arriving at her former end having turned roughly 180 degrees in total and re-facing her.
Seguidor
Mirroring, the follower breaks back on her right on count 2, staying clear to keep the slot open, and turns about a quarter-turn on 3-4 to face down the slot. On 6 she steps forward and walks toward his end, passing right shoulder to right shoulder; on 7 she completes the remaining quarter-to-half turn, re-facing him from the opposite end — about 180 degrees net split across the two turning points.
Tiempo musicalComfortable across typical New York mambo social tempos, roughly 150-185 bpm; above ~190 bpm the two-measure travel must be kept compact and the pass tightened. The break-on-2 feel suits son- and mambo-rooted arrangements where the conga and bass mark the 2.

Ten cuidado
Errores comunes
- Under-rotating so the partners stop short of the full ~180-degree exchange and fail to actually swap ends of the slot, leaving the track skewed
- Clipping the break onto count 1 instead of 2, losing the On2 mambo feel
- Compressing both breaks into a single measure — rushing the place exchange instead of opening on the first measure and travelling on the second
- The leader hauling the follower across by the arm rather than clearing the slot and letting her walk forward on her own steps
- Passing left shoulder to left shoulder (or colliding) because neither partner angles to the right-shoulder pass
- Both partners breaking toward each other on count 2 instead of each breaking back on the mirror foot (leader left, follower right)

Movimientos que se confunden
- Cross-body lead / Cuban 'dile que no' — the same slot-clearing family, but there the leader typically remains and rotates while the follower crosses, rather than both travelling to swap ends
- 'New York' as a styling break (a forward tap-and-cross body shine) taught in some curricula — a footwork accent, not this travelling place exchange
- 'Paso cruzado' / 'cruzado' — Spanish for 'cross step,' which names footwork, not this figure
- 'Salsa walks' / solo travelling shines — individual footwork done without a partner, not the partnered place exchange
- 'Line of dance' — the ballroom term for progression around the floor; the New York Walk travels the fixed slot, not a line of dance
