La rainbow copa es una figura de giro de salsa lineal de la familia de cross-body lead en la que el líder conduce a la seguidora hacia adelante, lleva las manos unidas hacia arriba y sobre su cabeza en un arco amplio con forma de arco iris, y la hace girar en sentido horario de vuelta para quedar frente a él. Es un miembro más vistoso dentro de la familia copa más amplia —un elemento fundamental de las figuras de giro de salsa en slot, también catalogada como el In and Out— que se distingue de la copa simple por ese desplazamiento sobre la cabeza. Interpretada como un único movimiento continuo de recogida y elevación, encaja tanto en el estilo lineal On1 como en el On2, y circula ampliamente por las escenas de baile latino en los Estados Unidos y América Latina.
Ejecución y tiempo
Desde una posición abierta o de cross-body, el líder rompe hacia atrás para conducir a la seguidora hacia él, eleva las manos unidas sobre la cabeza de ella y redirige su desplazamiento hacia un giro en sentido horario que la devuelve frente a él. Bailada On1, la figura abarca dos compases: el líder rompe hacia atrás en el tiempo 1, la seguidora rompe de nuevo en el tiempo 5 y ella resuelve quedando frente al líder en el tiempo 7. El arco depende de una guía clara hacia adelante, de un tono continuo en el brazo durante la subida y la bajada, y de un manejo preciso del slot en lugar de la fuerza: el giro se dirige con el marco corporal, no jalando del brazo.
Nombre y linaje
El nombre deriva del español copa, que significa taza o vaso, por la trayectoria en forma de copa que trazan las manos unidas al elevarse y descender a lo largo del arco. La copa misma tiene sus orígenes en Nueva York, donde se desarrolló como un paso de mambo antes de incorporarse al vocabulario de figuras de giro de salsa en slot que se baila hoy en día.
Contexto regional
La figura se adapta bien a los estilos en slot On1 y On2, y circula por las escenas de baile latino en todos los Estados Unidos y América Latina. En Colombia —cuya capital y ciudad más grande es Bogotá[1]— la salsa lineal coexiste con el estilo caleño de Cali, centrado en el trabajo de pies, que no privilegia esta figura sobre la cabeza.

He keeps elbow tone so the arc holds its shape and the lead reads as a frame, not a pull.
Seguidor
The follower steps forward toward the leader on her right foot on count 1, travels through 2-3, and lets the joined hand rise; on 5-6 she passes beneath the rainbow arc and turns clockwise — about a quarter as she is redirected, then completing the loop to roughly a full revolution — re-facing the leader on 7. She lets the lead, not her own anticipation, begin the forward travel and keeps her own frame through the arc.
Tiempo musicalSits comfortably in mid-tempo salsa, roughly 150-185 bpm, where the two-measure draw-and-arc has room to breathe; 185-200+ bpm is the fast end, where the over-head arc tends to rush and lose its shape. Errores comunes
- Leader yanking the follower forward with the arm instead of leading the draw from his own back break, breaking her frame
- Raising the rainbow arc too low or too late, so the hands catch the follower's head or hair and the arc loses its shape
- Failing to complete the redirect, so the follower stalls mid-loop and does not re-face the leader on 7
- Follower anticipating and traveling before the lead, arriving early and collapsing the two-measure shape
- Either partner drifting off the slot during the loop instead of keeping the redirect compact
- Leader losing elbow tone through the arc, so the over-head lead goes slack and the follower cannot read the turn
