El giro es la familia característica de figuras rotatorias en el samba de gafieira, el elegante baile de pareja brasileño que surgió de la tradición de salón y se baila con samba.[4] En un giro, la pareja co-rota alrededor de un único eje compartido sin soltar su posición cerrada, de modo que la figura funciona como medio principal para cambiar la orientación de la pareja y circular por la pista.[2] El nombre es simplemente la palabra portuguesa que designa 'vuelta', y los giros pertenecen al programa estándar de pasos del baile, junto al básico caminado como vocabulario fundamental.[1]
Ejecución
En su forma fundamental, los bailadores rotan alrededor de un único eje vertical compartido mientras mantienen el abrazo cerrado. El líder camina alrededor de ese eje para impulsar la rotación, mientras la seguidora recorre el arco opuesto en su propio lado; ambos se espejean en los pasos, no en la dirección de desplazamiento, lo que mantiene el marco intacto a medida que la pareja pivota.[2] Una indicación útil es construir el giro de manera progresiva a lo largo de compases sucesivos, en lugar de ejecutarlo de golpe como un único impulso: se abre aproximadamente un cuarto de vuelta y se acumula hacia una revolución completa a medida que la pareja recupera la alineación, manteniendo la rotación fluida y permitiendo al líder controlar hasta dónde llega la figura.[3]
Variantes con nombre propio
Los materiales didácticos catalogan numerosos giros con nombre propio, con dos polos que anclan el vocabulario. El giro a dois es un giro de pareja en el que ambos bailadores circulan juntos alrededor del eje común, mientras que el giro da dama es un giro de la seguidora —comúnmente conducido bajo un brazo elevado— en el que el líder permanece relativamente estático mientras la seguidora completa la revolución.[2] Estos giros de pareja y giros de la seguidora ocupan el centro del repertorio intermedio del baile, y el giro en su conjunto mantiene el porte erguido y el marcaje continuo que le otorgan al gafieira su reputación de forma elegante de baile en pareja.[4] Aunque la tradición tiene sus raíces en Brasil, su vocabulario portugués se mantiene intacto: en las escenas de la diáspora que enseñan el estilo, 'giro' sigue siendo el término de uso para estas vueltas.[1]

Líder
From a closed gafieira frame, the leader settles the shared axis, then steps around it to initiate the rotation — leading roughly a quarter turn over the first beats, then continuing to walk around the common centre to complete approximately a full 360° revolution by the figure's close, keeping the follower opposite him and the frame intact throughout.
Seguidor
The follower mirrors the leader's footwork (opposite foot, same rotational sense) and travels the matching arc on her own side of the axis — about a quarter on entry, completing to ~360° as the couple resolves back to facing alignment; in the follower's-turn (giro da dama) variant she instead spins ~360° under the raised lead arm while the leader marks the basic and frames the axis.
Tiempo musicalFits social samba played for gafieira at moderate tempos (roughly 100–130 bpm in 2/4); the staged rotation reads cleanly mid-tempo, while very fast sambas compress the bars and make a clean full revolution harder to complete. Gafieira is danced to 2/4 samba, not to salsa or to ballroom-competition samba arrangements.

Ten cuidado
Errores comunes
- Under-rotating — stopping short of the full revolution so the couple finishes misaligned and the frame collapses.
- Losing the shared axis so the partners drift apart and the turn flattens into a single pivot instead of a co-rotation.
- Rushing the whole rotation onto the first beat instead of distributing it as a staged budget across the bars.
- The leader muscling the follower around by the arm rather than leading the turn through frame and footwork.
- Dropping the gafieira marking and upright carriage during the turn, so the figure loses its samba character.

Movimientos que se confunden
- Volta — the travelling turn of ballroom International Samba (a different, progressive style); not the gafieira giro.
- 'Giro' in salsa or other Spanish-language dances — a generic word for any turn, not this specific gafieira figure.
