Pica-pau ('pico de pájaro') es una figura de samba de gafieira, la forma de pareja de la samba brasileña que surgió de los salones de baile de Río de Janeiro y se baila con ritmos de samba.[1] Pertenece a un repertorio codificado cuyo programa oficial se estableció en 2001.[1] Las figuras de gafieira se catalogan bajo nombres descriptivos en portugués brasileño tomados de imágenes cotidianas en lugar de conteos abstractos de pasos.[2] El baile se lleva en compás de 2/4, y su rebote característico — una elevación y caída controlada a través de las rodillas, sincronizada con el pulso — sustenta cada figura, incluida esta.[3] El nombre evoca el tamborileo de un pico de pájaro: la figura se construye sobre una sucesión rápida y sincopada de bajos golpecitos de pie que el líder introduce y el seguidor responde, acentuando los contratiempos mientras la pareja mantiene el marco y la conexión.[4] Como un acento ornamental y percusivo se superpone al básico de gafieira para puntuar una frase musical en lugar de desplazarse por la pista.[4] Pica-pau es específico de gafieira: no tiene contraparte en la samba solo no pé ni en el programa internacional de baile de salón de samba, que organizan su trabajo de pies bajo principios diferentes.[5]

Reading the leader's frame and weight cue, the follower answers with the mirror foot — opposite foot from the leader — matching the same syncopated tap run off the ball of the foot without dropping the bounce, staying light and connected, and resolving back into the basic with the leader on the same downbeat.
