El quadrado ('cuadrado') es el básico fundamental del samba de gafieira, el baile de pareja brasileño que surgió en los salones de baile gafieira de Río de Janeiro.[1] En su forma fechado ('cerrado') se baila siempre en una postura firme de posición cerrada, mientras la pareja traza una huella cuadrada compacta intercambiando el peso al pulso del samba en 2/4.[2] El líder y la seguidora se reflejan mutuamente en pies contrarios y se mueven como una unidad conectada: cuando el líder da un paso hacia atrás con el pie izquierdo, la seguidora avanza con el derecho por la misma línea, antes de que ambos se desplacen hacia un lado y retornen para cerrar el cuadrado.[3] El patrón se resuelve convencionalmente en cuatro transferencias de peso, una por tiempo, sostenidas sobre una suave flexión de rodillas que otorga al samba su rebote característico en lugar de un corte brusco.[4] Bailado esencialmente en el lugar, el quadrado es el ancla estructural desde la cual se lanzan las figuras abiertas, los giros y los caminados sincopados de la gafieira.[5] Los maestros brasileños suelen denominar la figura simplemente quadrado o básico, reservando quadrado aberto para el mismo cuadrado ejecutado fuera de la posición cerrada.[6] A través de la expansión de la gafieira desde los salones de baile de Río, sigue siendo el primer paso que se enseña a los recién llegados.[7]

From a firm closed-position frame, step back on the left foot (1); step the right foot to the side (2); step forward on the left foot to return (3); close the right foot to the left (4), riding a soft knee flexion throughout. Keep the square compact and danced on the spot, and lead each weight change cleanly before the follower anticipates it.
Seguidor
Mirroring on the opposite foot, step forward on the right foot as the leader steps back (1); step the left foot to the side (2); step back on the right foot to return (3); close the left foot to the right (4). Maintain the closed frame and follow the leader's weight change rather than initiating, letting the knee flex carry the samba bounce.

Errores comunes
- Letting the closed-position frame collapse or the connection break between weight changes.
- Taking steps too large, so the compact square drifts into travel and the couple loses its footprint.
- Stiffening the knees and omitting the soft samba bounce, producing a flat, marching quadrado.
- The follower anticipating the next side or back step instead of waiting for the leader's weight change.
- Stepping on matching rather than mirrored feet, causing the partners' feet to collide.
