El son basic (paso del son, o son básico) es el paso de pareja fundamental del son cubano.[1] El son es el género y baile más antiguo del cual surgieron luego el casino y la salsa, y muchos maestros sostienen que los bailarines de casino también deben aprender son para recuperar su sensación original.[2] Se baila en un abrazo cerrado y erguido con pequeñas transferencias de peso con base, en lugar de los amplios pasos viajeros del slot salsa.[3] Su rasgo definitorio es el tiempo: el son se baila en contratiempo, de modo que las parejas retienen un paso completo en el tiempo fuerte y colocan sus cambios de peso en los tiempos siguientes — una cualidad retardada y paseante que separa el ritmo del son del salsa en tiempo fuerte.[3] El patrón clásico, son clásico, no es una ruptura adelante‑atrás sino una pista compacta lateral, rectangular, unida con caminatas medidas, el líder trazando la caja a un lado mientras el seguidor la refleja con el pie opuesto.[1] Líder y seguidor mantienen los pies opuestos durante todo el movimiento, cada uno avanzando hacia el lado abierto desde la perspectiva de su propio cuerpo en lugar de amontonar el centro. El paso permanece con base y cadera nivelada, y sigue siendo la gramática de la cual las figuras de casino y salsa toman su fraseo.[2]

The withheld downbeat is what marks son apart from on-beat (a tiempo) salsa.
Líder
From a close, upright embrace, hold the weight on the strong beat 1 — son is danced a contratiempo, with no step on the downbeat. On 2 step the left foot to the left side; on 3 close the right foot beside it; on 4 settle with a small tap, tracing one short side of a compact rectangle. Hold again on 5; on 6 step the right foot to the right side; on 7 close the left; on 8 settle. Keep the steps small, hips level and knees soft, moving the partner as a unit through the frame rather than pushing with the arms.
Seguidor
Mirror the leader with opposite feet, travelling together as a unit. Hold on 1; on 2 step the right foot to the right side; on 3 close the left beside it; on 4 settle with a small tap. Hold on 5; on 6 step the left foot to the left side; on 7 close the right; on 8 settle. Stay grounded and level — no rising, reaching, or stepping on the held downbeats 1 and 5.
Tiempo musicalComfortable across roughly 140–180 bpm of son and son montuno; classic septeto and Buena Vista-era son sit in the relaxed lower-middle (~140–165 bpm), where the held downbeat reads clearly. Faster montuno passages of 185+ bpm are the quick end, where holding the contratiempo offbeat without collapsing onto the downbeat is hardest. Son is generally danced more unhurried than on-beat salsa.

Errores comunes
- Stepping on the strong downbeat (dancing a tiempo) instead of holding 1 and 5 — this collapses son's contratiempo into on-beat salsa timing
- Rising or bouncing between steps; son stays grounded with level hips and soft knees
- Taking large travelling steps so the compact rectangle drifts across the floor
- Leader and follower landing on the same foot instead of mirroring with opposite feet
- Driving the partner with the arms rather than moving as a unit through the frame
- Reaching toward or crowding the centre instead of each partner keeping its own grounded space

- Casino/salsa basic (guapea): danced a tiempo, on the beat — son is the older root but is timed on the contratiempo
- Mambo basic (On2): also breaks off the 1, but is a linear slot-salsa figure broken on count 2, not son's held-downbeat rectangle
- Paso cruzado / cruzado: a cross-step footwork element, not the son basic figure
- Son montuno: the up-tempo call-and-response musical section, not a step
