El son es el género cubano de música y danza ampliamente considerado como la base de la salsa moderna.[1] Se originó en el este de Cuba a finales del siglo XIX y se baila con una sensación relajada, de contratiempo, que se sitúa fuera del downbeat.[2] La vuelta es una de sus figuras giratorias fundamentales: el líder marca el son basic, luego levanta la lead hand para abrir una trayectoria curva a lo largo de la cual el seguidor camina una vuelta completa alrededor de un centro compartido antes de volver a enfrentarlo para retomar el básico.[3] El giro se camina, no se impulsa — el seguidor avanza sobre los tiempos de paso mientras mantiene el son tap, y la rotación se distribuye a lo largo de dos compases en lugar de ejecutarse en un solo tiempo.[3] El mismo giro circular subyace en el casino, o salsa cubana, donde se conoce como el giro habanero, o simplemente el habanero.[3] Una contraparte liberada y solista, el son suelta, elimina el agarre de pareja para que cada bailador improvise el giro solo, contrastando con la vuelta conectada y guiada por la mano en pareja.[4] En el amplio mundo de la salsa, el giro cubano caminando lleva la etiqueta "Cuban vuelta,"[3] mientras que los estilos lineales On1 y On2 sustituyen giros de punto compactos y rara vez emplean el término.

Líder
From a closed or open hold, mark the son basic with the tap, then raise the lead (left) hand to frame the follower and open a curved path. Lead her to walk forward around the shared centre, guiding roughly half the turn across the first measure and completing the remaining half — about a full ~360° in total — over the second measure, then lower the hand to resolve back to the basic. Lead a walked arc, never an arm-whip.
Seguidor
Keeping the son tap-step and mirroring the leader's feet (opposite foot, same sense of travel), step forward into the curved path the lead opens and walk around the shared centre, turning about ~180° across the first measure as the body travels, spotting, then completing the remaining ~180° over the second measure to re-face the leader and resume the basic.
Tiempo musicalComfortable to traditional son and son montuno at roughly 150–185 bpm, where the walked turn fits the relaxed phrasing; up-tempo casino or fast son-pregón at 190+ bpm compresses the walk and is the fast end. Below ~140 bpm the slower phrasing suits a more deliberate, ornamented turn.

Ten cuidado
Errores comunes
- Under-rotating — stopping short of the full ~360° so partners finish misaligned and cannot resume the basic cleanly.
- Whipping the follower with the arm instead of leading a walked, curved path (the vuelta is walked, not spun).
- Dropping the son tap or rushing the walk so the turn falls off the contratiempo phrasing.
- Failing to spot, causing dizziness and loss of the shared centre.
- Collapsing the frame mid-turn so the hand connection breaks before the turn completes.
