El balão — portugués de "balloon" — es una figura circular viajera en el zouk brasileño, el baile de pareja lead-and-follow cuyo vocabulario desciende de la lambada, una danza del estado brasileño de Pará que atrajo atención internacional en la década de 1980.[1] Toma su nombre de la pista redondeada, con forma de globo, que la pareja inscribe en el suelo: en lugar de avanzar en línea recta, el líder envía al seguidor a través de una órbita curva continua, de modo que la cualidad alargada, de ascenso y asentamiento del movimiento de zouk tiene espacio para respirar mientras las parejas se rodean mutuamente.[4]
Leading the orbit
Como el resto del léxico del zouk, el balão se dirige mediante el marco y el contrapeso más que por presión de brazo. El líder abre la rotación en el primer compás largo y permite que el seguidor recorra el arco durante los tiempos siguientes, avanzando aproximadamente medio giro en cada compás de modo que la trayectoria se cierra en un círculo completo en dos básicos.[5]
Balão apagado
La elaboración más conocida de la figura es el balão apagado, que superpone un movimiento continuo de cabeza sobre el desplazamiento del cuerpo. La cabeza del seguidor traza su propio pequeño círculo mientras el marco sigue orbitando, de modo que el movimiento parece inflar y vaciar el "balloon" en cada paso.[2]

Los programas estructurados de zouk tratan al balão viajero simple como un bloque inicial, enseñado poco después de los básicos lateral y elástico, y reservan sus variaciones de movimiento de cabeza y de pareja como material intermedio a avanzado para bailadores que ya mantienen un marco estable.[3] Debido a que el vocabulario del estilo se difundió desde Río de Janeiro hacia una única comunidad internacional, el nombre portugués viaja con la figura y se usa en clases casi en todas partes; las paráfrasis en inglés como "balloon" aparecen principalmente en guías introductorias de pasos escritas para recién llegados.[4]

From a settled frame, sink into the elongated first beat and open a rotation through the frame, guiding the follower onto a curved path rather than a straight line; counter-rotate or pivot around your own axis so her orbit stays round, release arm pressure so she travels the arc on counts 2-3, then continue the lead through a second basic until the path closes a full circle.
Seguidor
Receive the lead through the frame on the elongated first beat and step onto the curve, keeping your axis tall as you travel the rounded arc on counts 2-3; let the elongated zouk movement rise and settle rather than rushing, completing roughly half the circle each measure so the path resolves into a full balloon shape over two basics. In the apagado variation, let the head trace its own small circle as the body carries it.
Tiempo musicalBrazilian zouk music in 4/4, typically danced around 70-90 bpm; the balão sits comfortably across this band, with slower ballads near 60-70 bpm giving extra time for the elongation and head movement, and brisker tracks past ~95 bpm being the fast end where the round path tends to compress. Zouk is danced far slower than slot salsa - do not apply salsa tempo bands.

Ten cuidado
Errores comunes
- Flattening the orbit into a straight line so the path loses its round, balloon shape (under-rotating and stopping short of the full circle).
- Leading with arm pressure or pulling the follower instead of guiding the orbit through the frame and the couple's shared rotation.
- Rushing the elongated count 1 rather than letting it breathe, which collapses the rise-and-settle quality of the travel.
- The follower breaking her axis or leaning toward the centre instead of staying tall and travelling around the curve.
- Forcing the head from the neck in the apagado variation rather than letting it follow the body's circular momentum.
