Lead and follow cues

Lead

From a close embrace, step small to the left with the left foot and close the right foot beside it taking weight ('dois pra lá'); then step to the right with the right foot and close the left ('dois pra cá'). Keep the steps compact, weight low through soft knees, and lead the change of direction through the frame and chest rather than the arms.

Follow

Mirror the leader with the opposite foot: as he moves to his left, step to the right with the right foot and close the left ('dois pra lá', the same spatial direction); then travel back, stepping to the left with the left foot and closing the right ('dois pra cá'). Follow the lateral weight shift through the embrace and wait for the lead to reverse direction rather than initiating it.
