Rueda Básico
Fundamental eight-count step in Rueda de Casino
RuedaLevel: Beginner2 min read2 citations
The Básico is the foundational step of Rueda de Casino, the circular partner-exchange form of Cuban casino in which a single caller steers a ring of couples through figures danced in unison. It is the move the whole wheel returns to between calls — a full eight-count basic that keeps every dancer turning together and on the beat. In Cuban practice the figure is named the "Básico"; in English-speaking rueda communities it is usually shortened to the "Basic."
On each call every couple performs the same pattern, breaking on the first beat of each measure — counts 1 and 5 in On-1 timing — and holding on counts 4 and 8. A leader steps forward onto the right foot on count 1, replaces weight onto the left on 2, steps back onto the right on 3, and pauses on 4; the pattern repeats mirrored across counts 5–8, with the opposite foot taking the second break. Because all participants move at once, the step produces a shared forward-and-back swing while preserving the circular formation of the rueda.
Introduced in the opening minutes of any rueda workshop and present in every social wheel, the Básico is the rhythmic anchor from which more elaborate calls such as Dame or Enchufla depart and to which they resolve. Its simplicity lets dancers of differing skill levels stay synchronized, and it is danced to music across the typical salsa range of roughly 150–185 bpm[1].[2]

Prerequisites
- Basic salsa timing
- Ability to count 1‑8 in salsa
Watch out
Common mistakes
- Stepping on the wrong foot on the break (e.g., left foot on count 1).
- Eliminating the pause on counts 4 and 8, causing loss of synchronicity.
- Adding an unintended turn or rotation.
- Missing the weight transfer on count 2.
Don't confuse with
Easily confused moves
- ‘Basico’ may be confused with a ‘basic turn’ in other salsa styles, which involves a rotation rather than the straight forward‑back step.
