Full write-up

Dancing in the pocket is the competency of keeping kompa’s basic movement settled inside the groove rather than merely stepping on counted beats. It sits after basic timing, weight transfer, and a comfortable partner hold because the dancer must already know where the beat is before refining how the body arrives there. In practice, the pocket is expressed through small grounded steps, continuous weight changes, relaxed knees, and a torso that remains calm enough for the partner to feel the pulse without being pushed or pulled. The lead may suggest direction or rotation, but both lead and follow preserve the shared timing and avoid oversized travel that breaks the groove. In role-fluid or switch-friendly scenes, the same principle applies regardless of who initiates movement: the partnership listens for a common pulse and keeps the dance compact, musical, and socially readable. Because kompa is often danced in close or semi-close position, mutual comfort with distance is a non-negotiable boundary; either partner may open the frame, reduce contact, or decline closeness without explanation. Mastery of this node unlocks smoother walking variations, simple turns, and musical pauses because those elements depend on a stable pocket that continues underneath the figure.
