In Cuban casino the Vacila is a flirtation figure organized around a single unhurried pass, its name taken from the verb vacilar — to flirt, tease, or savor — which sets the mood the move asks for: the leader steps aside and savors the moment rather than rushing the follower through it.[1] Glossaries of casino-salsa terminology list it among the partnered figures rather than among footwork steps or solo shines, because its substance is the play between two dancers sharing a frame, not a sequence of fancy feet.[2]
From the open guapea basic, the leader breaks back, opens to one side, and lifts the joined hands to clear a path, then leads the follower to walk forward and across in front of him in an unhurried, flirtatious manner while he marks the rhythm in place and watches her go by.[3] Leader and follower mirror one another, breaking on opposite feet, so the follower's forward travel lands on the counts after the opening break rather than on the break itself; the practical cue is to keep the walk slow and let the gaze, not speed, carry the figure. The pass is danced a tiempo, on the 1, and stays within casino's circular frame rather than along a fixed linear track.[3] Cuban-salsa teaching treats the Vacila as foundational repertoire, taught once the basic step and the dile que no are secure, so that the leader can give full attention to framing the pass.[4]
In rueda de casino the figure is called in the imperative, Vacílala, paired with a matching caller hand sign so that every couple in the wheel performs the pass together on the same beat.[5] As casino spread beyond Cuba into international scenes, reference glossaries recorded both spellings — Vacila and Vacilala — preserving the move under either name across the wider casino and rueda community.[6]

Lead and follow cues

Lead
From the open guapea basic, on count 1 break back onto the left foot and open about a quarter to the side, lifting the joined hands to clear a path; on 2–3 settle and gently lead the follower forward and across the front, marking the beat and admiring the pass rather than pulling. On the second break (count 5) re-collect the connection to walk her back or feed the next figure. Opposite foot to the follower throughout; keep the frame circular, not a slot.

Mirror the leader: on count 1 break back onto the right foot, stepping away rather than forward; on 2–3 follow the raised-hand lead to walk forward and across in front of the leader with an unhurried, flirtatious carriage and glance — the travel happens on these counts, never on the break. On count 5 take the second break and follow the lead back or into the next figure, keeping the weight collected so the leader can redirect.

- Leader pulling or rushing the follower across rather than leading a relaxed, savored walk — the figure's character is the unhurried pass, not speed.
- Treating the pass as a linear slot exchange; casino's frame is circular, so the walk reads as an arc, not a straight track.
- Leader not opening enough to the side or not raising the hand, leaving the follower no room to walk by.
- Dropping the hand connection during the walk, so the follower cannot be redirected back on the second break.
